I recently purchased a used 2018 Swift Hybrid and have noticed that at high rpms, the engine begins to make strange noises. I'm not very familiar with cars, so I'm not sure what's causing the issue. I'm hoping to get some expert advice on what could be causing the problem.

Isn't it normal? I mean, it is all about shifting gears when the engine ask for it. Am I wrong?

That coughing sound you hear is probably the spark plugs misfiring. It's likely caused by some kind of electrical problem in the ignition system.

You usually hear it right after you turn the key off. That's when the coils release their electricity through the spark plugs, and it can ignite any leftover fuel in one of the cylinders.

I agree with @Stargazer$80 That sound is definitely not good unless your car's about to be wheeled into the operating room. Just kidding ;). Did you ever get it fixed? Any idea what was making it cough like that?

Used hybrids can be a bit tricky because their engine behavior is different from regular cars. If the noise only happens at high RPMs, it could be normal engine strain, or it could mean something’s off with fuel delivery. If the dealership or seller didn’t provide full maintenance records, I’d get the basics checked, spark plugs, air filter, and fuel system. If it’s still bad, a mechanic should take a closer look.
