Suzuki Swift with Potential Gasket Issue

I’m new here and honestly, I don’t know much about cars, so I’m looking for some guidance. I’m considering buying a Suzuki Swift that’s been sitting unused for the past 4 years after the owner passed away. It’s only done 60,000 miles, and overall it seems to just need a good clean and some cosmetic TLC. Mechanically, at first glance, it looks okay to me (though I’m no expert).

A friend of mine suggested I check under the engine cap for any “caramel” sludge, which he said could mean the engine gasket is on its way out. When I checked, there was some residue, but now I’m not sure if it’s a gasket issue or just condensation from sitting idle for so long. Someone else mentioned that with such low mileage, a failing head gasket would be surprising unless there’s another issue.

The car doesn’t have an MOT, and the seller is asking $350 for it. Should I take the gamble? What do you think, condensation or something more serious? Is it worth taking the risk at this price, or should I keep looking?

At $350, the Swift sounds like a good deal, but it’s important to check a few things first.

The “caramel” sludge could just be from the car sitting for so long. To be sure, try filling the radiator with water and let the engine run for 30 minutes. The fan should kick on after 15 minutes, and both radiator collars should be hot. If the water in the expansion tank stays calm, it is a good sign the head gasket is fine.

If that all checks out, then you can move on to the cosmetic stuff. It might be worth the risk if the engine seems okay!
